Are you striving to be the BEST IN THE WORLD? To beat out the competition? Or, do you want to strive to be your BEST VERSION? Seeking to be the best for yourself and others and to connect to your authentic values and purpose? Leading to being the BEST FOR THE WORLD. Striving to be what is needed for a better future, not serving that beast called insecurity, which demands we show ourselves off by putting others down. PURPOSE and values are your true north, guiding you when insecurity and indecision tempt to crash our course.
Power does not come from taking power and creating fear. That just creates fear-driven/ low-power behavior. The MOST powerful give it away; and in so doing become powerful, as they are able to multiply themselves in untold ways. Clarity of purpose is the pathway.
Combine purpose with passion and you create unstoppable partnerships. When a cowboy creates a close relationships with his herding dog-who has an INNATE DRIVING PASSION TO HERD- works closely to create and understanding of how they will work together, then turns that dog loose to simply do its work, that cowboy extends his capability far beyond his own capacity. The herding dog has clarity of purpose, a passion for what it is doing, and gives of itself wholly and without reserve.
PEOPLE are PACK animals. With INNATE passions. We are not that much different. Provide clarity of direction that taps into our given talents, and the majority of people will give of themselves unequivocally.
Yeah, that all sounds great...but. I have employees that..."fill in the blank."
(1) Indeed! We do have employees that resist, refuse, and certainly under or fail to perform. Who wants to empower them to go out and do their work? (2) So, we push them to do more! If they are not meeting expectations, we either need them to step it up , or they need to find another role/job/occupation. (3) It is so baffling, right? Because we have other team members that are doing it! So clearly it is possible; AND it must not be the role/leader/company! (4) The core question is, and often fails to be asked, aside from all the other white noise, can and has the employee performed the task/project before, and well? For example, jumper horses can - and will- jump without a rider. In freestyle jumping a horse can and will perform very well. The only thing that changes with a rider is the pattern and time; and the form and stride without. (5) If a leader's role in employee and team performance lies FIRST in providing clarity- and NOT in being the barrier- how well is that being done? How much work is being doing done to ensure that an effective communication channel is in place to build trust, understanding, and the ability to translate
PURPOSE, PROCESS, and PAYOFF?
As picture number 5 depicts, this rider has invested in themselves equally or more than in the horse; in their ability to balance herself, so as not to be a barrier to the horse's ability to clear the jump, to have the strength in her lower body to be a stable rider, not a shaky one that the horse has to work at keeping on its back AS WELL as clearing the jump. Horse and rider develop trust, respect, and communication through body movements. The use of reins, spurs, and crops (think HR, PIPs) become unnecessary. The horse has become an extension of the rider- and now simply completes the thoughts and movements. Without the restrictions the horse is able to maintain its natural form and execute an exceptional jump.
